Supporting Renewed Hope – and Remembering Those Without a Home

Aug 5, 2025 | Renewed Hope

At Priory Law, we have the privilege of helping people move into new homes every day – a fresh start that often brings hope and excitement. But at our recent team meeting, we were powerfully reminded that for many in our community, a safe and secure home remains heartbreakingly out of reach.

We were honoured to welcome Hugh from Renewed Hope, who joined us to thank us for supporting their work through our charity volleyball competition in Brighton, and to share more about what they do. Listening to Hugh and watching their video featuring real stories from people who have visited the Drop-In centre, stayed in the Night Shelter, or lived at Hope House, brought home the everyday reality of homelessness in a way that statistics alone never could.

Homelessness isn’t always what we imagine. It can happen suddenly – through what some call a “sliding doors” moment: a job loss, illness, family breakdown or unexpected crisis. Over 280,000 people in England alone are currently homeless, many of them hidden from view, and often through no fault of their own.

As Prince William has said, “There has to be a better way than just accepting that homelessness is there, and we just live with it.”

Renewed Hope’s work focuses on three key projects that together provide warmth, stability, and a pathway forward:

Drop In
Held at Shrewsbury Chapel in Redhill, the Drop In is open Monday to Friday from 11 am to 3 pm. It offers anyone a welcoming space to come in, share conversation, and enjoy a free hot lunchtime meal. For many, it’s not just about food – it’s about being treated with dignity and reminded they are not alone.

Hope House
Hope House provides accommodation for four homeless men, offering more than a bed – it becomes a place they can call home while working towards independent living. With guidance and support, residents can rebuild routines, regain confidence and take practical steps towards a better future.

Night Shelter
During the coldest months, Renewed Hope runs a night shelter, offering emergency accommodation to people who would otherwise be sleeping rough. A warm, safe place for the night can make a life-changing difference at a moment of crisis.

Reflecting on these realities, Anne-Marie Fowler, Managing Director at Priory Law, shared a deeply personal experience that recently moved her:

“I was recently struck by the sight of a mother with her three children, surrounded by bags and clearly distressed. It was obvious she had nowhere to go at that moment in time. It brought home to me how easily anyone’s life can be turned upside down, and the urgent need for charities like Renewed Hope.”

Anne-Marie also said:

“Listening to Hugh speak about Renewed Hope and seeing their video showing the real experiences of those who have visited the Drop-In centre, stayed at the Night Shelter or lived at Hope House, really touched my heart. It reminded me – and all of us – that homelessness is not just a statistic; it’s someone’s life, changed in an instant. We are privileged to help people move home every day, but it’s so important we remember those who don’t have that security and do what we can to help.”

At Priory Law, we’re proud to support Renewed Hope and remain committed to continuing this partnership. Hearing from Hugh — and listening to the real stories of those who have benefitted from Renewed Hope’s work — has inspired us, and we hope it inspires you too, to pause and remember those who aren’t so fortunate.

We encourage everyone to take the time to learn more about this incredible local charity and consider how you might help — whether that’s through volunteering, fundraising, donations, or simply by sharing their message. Together, even the smallest acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference.
